Sellwood Community Center

Sellwood Community CenterWhat’s to Love: Established in 1920, The Sellwood Community Center remains an important fixture in the neighborhood.  While a bit worse for wear, fans of Sellwood’s small-town-feel will ultimately enjoy the space.  The Center offers a plethora of programs throughout the year and a day camp program in the summer.  This small space has plenty to offer!

Sellwood Community CenterCheck-out their website (link below) for more information about their programs.  We just happened to drop-in to their “Messy Art” class, which was reasonably priced!  The folks running the class were excellent with the kids and setup various project stations.

Messy Art at Sellwood Community CenterThere is a brand new (albeit small) playstructure outside the center that is perfect for toddlers and/or small children.  Inside, you’ll find a nice air hockey table, bumper pool and ping pong.  It’s free to play!  There are special open-playtime hours where they open the gymnasium for free play.  This is a good time to let the kids cut loose a bit.  The staff members are friendly, and you’ll enjoy the neighborly feel of this place.

Sellwood Community Center PlaystructureCaveats:  It was established in 1920, and it’s still in the same building.  Obviously, it is a bit run down and small, but it fits well with the surrounding community.

Distance from Portland:  Within 3 miles of downtown Portland

Recommended Ages:  Offers programs for all ages!

Parental Stress Factor: Very low stress community center.

Physical Difficulty:  Not difficult.  The building is not handicap accessible.

Family Fun Factor:  “Family Fun” is probably in the low to medium range.  Of course, that doesn’t mean the family can’t have fun here.  It simply means that most programs target specific age ranges.

Pet Friendly:  No dogs

Weather Considerations:  Great for rainy days!

Sellwood Community Center - Summer ProgramInsider Info:  The Center is in the heart of Sellwood, which means biking access via the Springwater Corridor Trail, New Seasons Market, Spielwerk Toy Store, Sellwood Park, and much, much more!

FYI - The Center will accept registration over the phone with a credit/debit card.  If it’s a class and you want to enter after it started, they will probably pro-rate the price.
